The Company • Polimeri Europa ranks first in the Italian chemical industry in terms of turnover, volumes and numberof employees, holding significant market shares in Europe. • Polimeri Europa’s business portfolio includes Basic Chemicals (olefins, aromatics and intermediates), Polyethylene, Elastomers and Styrenics. • Polimeri Europa production sitesare locatedin Italy, Belgium, France, Germany, Great Britain, Hungary and Portugal; the commercial network covers all the European countries. Company highlights 2006 • Production: 7.1 million tons Health, Safety and Environment • Polimeri Europa issues anannual “Health, Safetyand Environment” Report providing quality-and quantity wise all aspects of the Company’s impact on the territory. The environmental indicators taken under examination show a continued and consolidated positive performance. • In 2005 Polimeri Europa spent € 151 million in safety and environmental care operations; the expenditure for activities relevant to healthcontrol was € 2.6 million; environmental control activities accounted for€ 1.6 million. • In 2005 the accident frequencyindex and the accident seriousnessindex have shown for the Italian operations a reduction of more than 50% ascompared to the two previous years. • As far as Product Safety is concerned, Polimeri Europa best practices are well established and regarded as a reference also outside the Company. • The Company contributes to a better definition of the new European regulatory framework for chemicals (REACH: Registration, Evaluationand Authorization of Chemicals). • An ongoing monitoring activity is in place in order to consolidate the UNI EN ISO 14001 certifications for the environmental management and the registrations according to EMAS EU regulations. The Responsible Care programme • Polimeri Europa participates in the chemical industry’s Responsible Care programme, set for the continued improvement of the chemical industry performance in the HSE area. • The programme is implemented by the voluntary adoption of management systems and procedures aimed at the environmental excellence in all the aspects relevant to the production, transport and use of chemical products. • Special attention is paid to the development and optimization of recycling and recoverytechnologies and initiatives for the final disposal of waste and/or end-of-lifegoods. QualityAssurance All steps involved in designing, producingand marketing basic chemicals, polyethylene, elastomers and styrenics manufactured in the Italian plants and in the Hungarian plant of Százhalombattaare certified by Certiquality, according to UNI EN ISO 9001. Similarly, the productions in the plants of Dunkerque and Champagnier (F) are certified by AFAQ, in Oberhausen(D) by DQS, in Feluy(B) by AIB-VINCOTTE, in Grangemouth and Hythe(GB) by BSI and in Neiva(P) by SGS. Research and Technology • R&D activities contribute to strengthen Polimeri Europa’s businesses through a continued improvement of processes and products. Further value to the R&D activities is brought by licencing proprietary technologies to third parties. • The Company operates researchcentres in Brindisi, Ferrara, Mantova and Ravenna involving about 500 people, 45% of which hold a university degree and 40% a diploma. • Total R&D expenditure in 2006 was €49 million, representing 1.0 % of Polimeri Europa turnover. Styrenics Business Company Profile Polimeri Europa, the Eni petrochemical group, has 18 production plants in Europe. It markets and sells Basic Chemicals, Styrenics, Elastomers and Polyethylene using a world-wide sales network. A comprehensive range of Styrenics is produced at 4 plants, supported by modern research centres, to satisfy the technical requirements of a wide variety of industrial companies. So Polimeri Europa introduces itself as a complete supplier whose key strength is: integration, service, assistance and innovation. • The production is carried out in Italyat, Mantova and Settimo Milanese, and in Europeat, Feluy(B) and Százhalombatta(H). • The mission of the Business is to consolidate and improve the presence of Polimeri Europa in the relevant markets and sectors, developing the competitive edge deriving from its proprietary processes and technologies.
